In 1951, he was University of Malaya's sole recipient of a first-class honors degree in Economics. He later completed a doctorate in Economics (Hakase) at the highly prestigious Waseda University, Tokyo. Ungku then served University of Malaya, the country’s most revered and highly esteemed University, in various capacities including as the Dean of Economics and Administration Faculty. He further rose to prominence when he was appointed Vice Chancellor. A post he diligently and passionately served for almost 20 years. During his tenure, the university was consistently ranked as one of the top Universities in the world. Internationally, he has been invited by the United Nations to offer his expert advice and opinions in places such as Bangkok, Geneva, Cyprus, Ceylon, Indonesia and India. In recognition of his contributions and commitment, Ungku has been honored with doctorates from the Universities of Warwick, Buckingham, Bath, Pittsburgh, Chulangkorn, Philippines, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia. He has also been bestowed with the "Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure First Class" by the Emperor of Japan. |
In 1997, Ungku was awarded "Tokoh Maal Hijrah" by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (His Royal Highness, The King). In 2008, he was accorded with a special 'Merdeka Award' (Independence Award) for his contributions to the eradication of poverty, rural economics and the development of the Pilgrims Management and Fund Board (Tabung Haji). Today, he remains the sole Royal Professor in the country and is Chairman of the Cosmopoint Group and Chancellor of Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMU). At the University College, Ungku has been the driving force in ensuring that the institution continues to improve on both its academic offerings and operations in order to realize its vision to be the regional leader in terms of quality and affordable higher learning. |
